Richmond Connects:
Tactical Urbanism

Project No.09
Project Overview
To prepare design improvements for "The Path to Equity: Policy Guide for Richmond Connects' " plan: research existing conditions of recently improved streetscapes, map vulnerability zones based on Richmond Connects' standards, determine site project area(s) based on aforementioned zones of high vulnerability, utilize 'lighter, quicker, cheaper' strategies rooted in minimizing automobile-centric designs and planning.
Inspiration
This project stemmed from the aspiration to create transportation infrastructure improvements that were community-driven, equity-focused, responsive to community needs, and less capital intensive than traditional top-down planning projects. In partnering with Richmond Connects, designs address mounting concerns over automobile-centric planning that creates inequitable access to transportation funding. Concepts here have the potential for use in future participatory budgeting projects within The Path to Equity: Policy Guide for Richmond Connects. Build-out is dependent on community votes.

Designs herein are transferable and non site-specific, but research shows great benefit for improved safety, access, and greening if placed at the listed location.

Community Engagement
While working on a team with SFCD, city officials, and professional designers for the Jackson Ward Community Plan, we held focus groups and listening workshops where residents and community members discussed and voted on improvements they'd like to see in their community. Overall, the conversations started by Gilpin residents and the community at large focused heavily on accessibility, safety, and greening. This project lends itself to all three areas in creating a temporary parklet for bus users that can be retrofitted to complement the BRT system within Richmond through ease of foot traffic.
